What do you guys think is an appropriate amount of money to expect your bridesmaids to spend on their dress? I'm taking into account the cost of alterations as well, which could be really expensive!
BTW - check out this atrocity? I hope this pic is from the 80s.

I'd say no more than $100. I guess it's thoughtful for the bride to consider each bridesmaid's financial situation (general idea). Like if you have a bunch of college students, you might wanna find dresses you love that are inexpensively priced.
1Its hard to say because dresses are so expensive but I think $100 is great. But really you spend so much more with shoes, hair and makeup its expensive.
2I hate it when "Diva Brides" don't consider how much being a bridesmaid's going to cost. Dress, shoes, make-up hair, nails, gifts for bride and groom, travel, hotel, etc. That's why I think it's really nice when brides consider all of these expenses and comes up with creative ways for her girlfriends to save money.
3I paid all but 100$ of my girls' dresses... and I bought their shoes.
My bff is getting married in Mexico this summer and she is paying for our dresses b/c of the travel expense.
4$100 sounds very reasonable, especially since they do have shoes and stuff to buy to go with them. And unless they make more alterations, chances are its a dress they wear once and hang in the closet, until their first born uses it for a Hallowe'en outfit.

$100 is more than enough for a dress that will never be worn again. I've been a bridesmaid 6 times, and the last time when my friend called to ask me, I whined 'but I thought you loved me!' She laughed but I was only half-kidding. The novelty of being a bridesmaid wore off after the second time. After that I found I began to resent the cost of that 'honor'.
6That is all great to know. I am only having 3 bridesmaids and that's it. I even said they could pick out the dress, since they'r'e the ones who have to wear it. I trust that they know what will look good on them. And since they picked it, they obviously like it, and will probably be able to wear it again.
$100 - that seems kind of low. If we go to a bridal shop, I feel lik most of the dresses will start at $150 or $200...
7BTW the picture is really funny! I agree with everyone here its so sweet of you to consider this a lot of brides don't.
8Sometimes you can talk to the shop owner (if its a boutique) and they could probably work out a deal with you. Two of my girls are still in highschool (my cousins) and I know their parents are shopping for their prom dresses at the same time, so I talked to a couple of boutique owners and they agreed to work with my anticipated budget for the dresses. I am looking for $150 and below. Im paying for their jewelry and if financials permit, possibly their shoes.

9Hi Ho silver....Awwwwwaaaaaaaaayyyy!!
my b maids dresses were 150 before alterations. i paid for all their gloves and their hair and makeup and gave them 50 dolar gift certificates to victorias secret as well
10I'm going to work on paying for part of their rooms at the Inn, since it's so freaking expensive. But I LOVE the Vikki Seceet gift card idea too. Thanks SWEET C.
11I spent $120 on a really simple bridesmaid dress, so $100 is getting off easy. I'd say probably $150 to $200, but tell them to get Payless shoes. I told my two bridesmaids to get any color and any style dress they wanted, just no blue or red and try to keep it pastel because my dress was beige. I ended up with a light green and a pale yellow, three three of us looked awesome together.
12*the three of us.
13I got one of mine an iPod gift card, and the other (my sister) a pink leather iPod case and gift card. Of course both of them are young and at the time all they could think about was their iPod, so Victoria's Secret would have just gotten me in trouble with the 'rents.
14Snow, no matter how good your intentions, if the dress isn't an LBD they won't wear it again. I have 3 "great" dresses in my closet that will never be worn again.
The more inexpensive and simple the dresses, the happier your friends will be. The most exp of my BM dresses was almost $300, and the bride paid half and bought our shoes, bags and jewelry. It was a BEAUTIFUL dress, but it was def a bridal party dress. I will never wear it again.
15I would say around $100 for the dress. I had 3 bridesmaids, and I bought their dresses from Anthropologie for about $75 each. They're totally cute and they can wear them again.
16The most I've paid was $150. I had a friend who rented our bridemaid dresses - $35 for the day and her mom took them back that next morning! I loved that since it wouldn't have been worn again.
