Boy am I glad I found this group. Anywho... Im getting married in September and Im still on this HUGE debate with myself regarding my last name. Im the oldest grandchild and first girl in the family to carry the "Nieves" last name through blood, but with that in the back of my mind Im conflicted as to what I should do with my last name. I know that I want my future children to follow my latino culture and have the two last names, but Im stuck as to mine. In the end I came up with the following:
1. Clark (his last name)
2. Nieves- Clark
3. Nieves de Clark
4. Incorporate my last name with my middle name so my initials would be (I.N.C.)
Vero Moda
H.I.S
Esprit
I've always, always been a fan of making your maiden name your middle name.. which I suppose is option #4.
I can't really do that because my last name is a color.. that doesn't sound so great as a middle name. Haha. Oh well.
1Nieves-Clark sounds nice! How does he feel about it?
2I never changed my last name but its never too late. Its nice to have his name too its like you're your own family.
3He's pretty laid back about the whole scenario. since this is his second marriage he jokes that I should change it to Mrs. Clark 2.0 the upgrade...lol.

4Hi Ho silver....Awwwwwaaaaaaaaayyyy!!
Hey, congrats. September, huh? Funny about Mrs. Clark 2.0
Yeah it's a tough decision. I like the idea of dropping your middle name and using Nieves as your middle name, and then you can take his last name. Is that what you meant by #4?
It's totally your preference though. If you did hyphenate your 2 last names, would your children have the same hyphenated name?
I have a similar problem. All my friends call me by my last name, so I really don't want to drop it. But I want to be a family with my hubby, future kids and I all having the same last name.

6I've been married for a little over a month, and I still haven't decided what to do. I'm torn between using my maiden name as my middle initial and changing my last name to his, or hyphenating. I'm actually leaning more towards hyphenating. As of right now, my name is the same as it's always been!
Truthfully, all this does is cause an unecessary identity crisis!
7Yeah, and you have to change a bunch of legal documents if you change your name. What a pain!
8When I got married, I hyphenated my maiden and married last names. It drives my husband crazy, because he always screws up our taxes. Considering we've been married for nearly 6 years now, you'd think he'd get used to it by now, but that's an entirely different issue
I
would say go with the hyphenated Nieves- Clark. You're still keeping your last name, but also taking his. It's like you're married but still independent. Hope it all works out for you!!
9being hispanic like you, i like option 3... that's how my mom solved the issue and thats probably how i'll solve mine when i get married...
10only thing is that here in the States the whole maiden name + de + his last name gets a little confusing since its not the norm... so my mom goes by my dad's last name for mail and credit card purposes...
I'm not hispanic, but the third option is a great idea. You get to have both names without the hypenation bit. I'd like to do that with my future husband, since my Dad only has girls.
11I also like Nieves de Clark. It sounds almost aristocratic like the old Conquistadors
